Case Study: Using MakeWaves to capture and share local stories

Essex County Records Office and Braintree Museum worked with pupils at Gosfield Primary School to investigate the impact of war on their area. They used MakeWaves to capture and share their project with the community.

Essex County Records Office ran two parallel projects with two partner museums and two local primary schools to investigate the impact of war on their local community. The projects incorporated a series of activities, including meeting WW2 veterans and current servicemen, and culminated in a 'Veterans Tea Party' where members of the community came together to hear what the pupils had learned.

Only one of the projects worked with MakeWaves as the other partner museum’s staff were nervous about using this kind of technology and felt they didn’t fully understood its benefits. In retrospect, this provided a good basis for comparison between the two projects.

MakeWaves was completely led by the school in this project and was successfully embedded within the curriculum from the start. The nature of the project (high ability group, flexibility of a primary curriculum, buy in from the start by teaching staff at the school) meant the approach could be explored fully.

How did they use MakeWaves?
A small group of Year 5/6 pupils were trained to use the MakeWaves site and equipment. These pupils then mentored the rest of the class to use the technology. The teacher used MakeWaves as a way of capturing and sharing key events throughout the project as well as providing an audience for the pupils to present their thoughts and opinions to. The project had a strong oral history element into which MakeWaves was naturally integrated. It enabled the students to fully capture these interviews and share them with a wider audience.

As part of the project the students interviewed a current serviceman, Captain Mark Taylor. Capturing the interview with him enabled the children to see the impact of war on their own lives and reflect some of their responses to his visit in their blogs.

The Veterans’ tea party also allowed them to capture interviews and the flavour of their project. Once posted online, members of the community left comments about the experience for the children.
