Young Carers in Focus: An Introduction

So what is Young Carers in Focus all about?

YCiF Network
Young Carers in Focus (YCiF) is an exciting new opportunity for young carers to feel empowered and supported to have a say about their lives and facilitate change at a Local and National level.

The Young Carers in Focus (YCiF) programme, led by The Children’s Society, brings partners together from YMCA Fairthorne Manor, DigitalMe, Rethink Mental Illness and The Fatherhood Institute. The four-year programme, running until 2016, is funded by Big Lottery.

The programme will be led and informed by young carers themselves. A key aim is to ensure that participating young carers have improved resilience, confidence, skills and knowledge, improving their wellbeing and quality of life, particularly during key educational transition points to independence. To do this, we'll be recruiting and working directly with over 200 Young Carer Champions across England, providing training and exciting opportunities.

We'll also be reaching out to all young carers across the country through the YCiF network on Makewaves, a safe social networking site. This online space will allow young carers to communicate, share their stories and campaign for the things that matter most to them, as well as hear about programme developments, online activities and debates for your group to get involved in.

All schools and colleges will have young carers, so participating in this programme could help improve identification and support with education settings. For participating Young Carers Projects / Services it will enable their young people to have cohesive national voice. Being involved in YCiF will open up opportunities for training, for both young people and project workers/teachers, chances to promote your messages at a national level, and be part of a national community of young carer projects.

Schools, and Young Carers projects and services can get involved by creating their own site on the network. Only project leaders or teachers can register for a site - to find out more and join the network click here:

Are you a young person? You'll need to ask your project leader or teacher to register for a site, click here to find out more and download a letter to pass on to them with instructions on how to join.
