Everybody knows that 6th of December is a very special date - St. Nicholas Day. This
fete is celebrated differently in different countries, but I'm going to tell, how we celebrate it in Poland.

What is the origin of this feast?
As probably everybody knows Saint Nicholas (also called Nikolaos of Myra) lived in the 4th century and he was bishop of Myra in present-day Turkey. He became famous as a miracle worker, saving boaters and the city from starvation. He showed how brave and righteous he is, when he saved from the garbage wrongly convicted officials. Nicholas also raised three young men killed for the unpaid bill for the overnight stay at the inn.

Saint Nicholas shared his wealth with the poor, so resulting in his honor we have St. Nicholas Day, when we give one another presents.

Some children find their gifts under the pillow or in a sock, others receive gifts from the hands of parents. These are usually small gifts, we get bigger presents for Christmas, so besides, St. Nicholas Day reminds us that Christmas is coming. Children believe that Nicholas is coming also in Christmas as Santa Claus.
