On 24th of October 2010 a great day for democracy happened. The FIRST BLACK MAYOR of Ghanaian origin in the Eastern part of Europe was elected - Peter Bossman

The very second that the 2010 local elections result were in, the media went crazy. The news that a black man was elected in a small town of Piran, in a country as unimportant as Slovenia spread like wildfire through-out the world. Bossman was immediately marked as a new, Slovenian Obama. Many famous news agencies, like CNN, BBC, CBS, Independent, Guardian, Ghana Web, Daily Telegraph, Washington Post and Radio Moskva wrote about this phenomenon. In the interviews Bossman said, he wasn't only proud of himself, but also of the magnitude of acceptance Slovenians have for a change such as this. "In the first months after coming to Slovenia I felt that some people did not want to be with us [African immigrants]. But for the last 10 or 15 years ... I have no problems at all and I think people no longer see the colour of my skin when they look at me," he said.

This freshly acquired fame gave him even more strength to talk about the important issues. In his four years, he wishes to help the economics of the Slovenian coast and refresh Piran's tourism. He is also thinking of a solution to the Global warming problem with implementation of electric cars in Piran.

The vote in Piran was a test of whether Slovenia was "mature enough to elect a non-white mayor." I think we passed!
