BBC News School Report Sports Day 2010

Students from Catmose College report on the sports news

BBC News School Report Sports Day 2010
On Thursday 1 July, as part of the National School Sports Week, seven students met in the library to work on the BBC News School Report Sports Day with College Librarian, Beth Smith.

The students initially looked at which stories in the sports news they were going to cover. Using his experience from taking part in the BBC News Day back in March, Tom automatically became the floor manager/editor and took control of the stories and advising the students.

They decided upon an International sports section which included updates on the latest news from football, cricket and tennis as well as covering the local Rutland T20 cricket competition which one of the students, Charlie, had attended. Using the extra information in the Rutland Times, Charlie wrote his script in preparation for the main recording session later in the day.

Three students were taken over to the Multi-Skills games at Oakham Rugby Club where students from years 3 and 4 were learning and taking part in new sports. This event had been put on by the Rutland School Partnerships with support from the Sports Leaders from the College.

One of our students, Conor had interviewed two current Wind Surfing junior world champions when they held their Marathon event at Rutland Water in June. His interview was featured as part of the live radio broadcast.

After break the students finished writing the scripts and after lunch they started recording the news with each of the students taking part in presenting. College Librarian, Beth Smith said ‘The students really enjoyed the day. There were many outtakes but they learned new skills in a fun but busy environment.’

The students involved were Grace, Olivia, Taz, Charlie, Ethan, Conor and floor manager/editor Thomas.
